Meeting in the middle for hickory golf

Hickory golfers will find a way. From Kansas, Mike Needleman writes that three hickory men just had to get out for round of golf. It was nothing for the gents to pack up the clubs and drive two hours each way for a good day out at Spring Creek in Seneca, Kan. From left are Larry Kresbach, Lincoln, Neb.; Mike Needleman, Overland Park, Kan.; and Paul Jensen, Lincoln, Neb. All three are members of the Nebraska Hickory Golf Association – NEHGA, with Mike also the founder of the KC Area Hickory Golfers. “We decided to meet halfway for a fun day out. We had a great time on a great course. ‘Masked’ of course for clubhouse entry!”

Here’s another tale of traveling hickory golfers, but one that turned out all wet.

Scott Petersen and Jim Davis of Grand Rapids, Mich., drove 500 miles on a Thursday to reach Des Moines for the Iowa Hickory Classic. “As soon as we hit the Iowa border it began to rain…hard,” Petersen said. “It did not let up.” The two hoped to play on the 1916 Tom Bendelow Hyperion Golf Course, but it was flooded. After early Friday a.m. consultations with event host Bill Reed, who tried hard to convince the two to stay, it was clear that no play was going to happen at Hyperion, so, the guys got back in the car and turned its nose toward Michigan. They drove for five solid hours in a driving rain, windshield wipers at their highest setting. They were back in Michigan before things began to dry out. No matter. Turns out that when GHS/SoHG members get together, no matter what the circumstances, a pleasant time can be had. The two swapped yarns, stories, and laughter the entire way. “Would have been nice to have played at Hyperion, though,” Petersen said. “Maybe next year.”

Nae gowf today.
