Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club
Temple Terrace, Fla.
This 7th annual hickory golf weekend at TTG &GC celebrates one of the first professional events in Florida on a course developed by Tom Bendelow that once had “Long” Jim Barnes as its professional. Conducted and hosted by local golf professional and hickory golf champion Mike Stevens, the weekend includes three golf events:
- The Hickory Hacker golf scramble on Saturday.
- The Mike Stevens Challenge on Sunday, a Ryder Cup style match play pitting a 16-person team against a team from the Florida Hickory Golfers.
- The U.S. Professional Hickory Golf Championship on Monday.
The Knickers Bash dinner follows golf on Saturday. A brunch precedes the Mike Stevens Challenge on Sunday. Both are included in the registration fee and guests are welcomed at each for an additional modest fee.
As for the professional tournament on Monday, the event honors American’s “First Golf Professional,” John Shippen Jr., who competed in several early U.S. Opens and was the professional at Shinnecock Hills. Non-professionals may play, but must be qualified by Stevens.
This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the game as it was played in the early 1920s on one of Florida’s historic golf courses.
