It is one heck of a golf tournament, but then, its host is Ron Lyons.
The boundless energy and enthusiasm of one of Canada’s golf icons has produced a hickory championship that is fast becoming a legend itself. “Where else can you get five days of hickory golf, meals, and merriment at this close to 1935 prices!” says Lyons. “It’s a two-day hickory road trip followed by the three-day 18th annual Canadian Open Hickory Championship.”
The fee for the championship is $135 (Canadian).
The Legends Golf and Country Club, by the way, was designed and built by Lyons himself. The Canadian Open uses all 27 holes of this picturesque course over three days. The schedule:
Aug. 13-14
Many arrive a few days early or stay a few days afterwards to golf at a variety of courses. Early arrivers go on the annual hickory golf road trip on the Monday and Tuesday and participate in the Canadian Open Hickory Championship Wednesday to Friday. Sounds like a great week, eh? All are welcome!
Aug. 15
Practice rounds and four-man scramble team event followed by a barbecue and social.
Aug. 16
Canada/U..S Challenge for the Casey Cup – Ryder Cup match play format over 27 holes: nine holes each of two-man scramble, better ball, and singles match play. All this is followed by a great evening meal and get-together.
Aug. 17
This is the day of the 27-hole championship in conjunction with the 18th annual Legends inductee tournament. Each year, the Legends inducts an important Canadian golf figure into its hall of champions/legends. There is a steak dinner BBQ after the round.
