World Hickory Golf Day celebrated on Sunday, May 2

World Hickory Golf Day was created to set aside one day each year, the first Sunday in May, to celebrate the sport. We invite all of you who observed the day in this way to send a photo or other note about your hickory golf day.

Greg Smith, left, and Don Modeling celebrated the day in Wisconsin with a match play round.

Two fellows in Wisconsin, in the U.S., held an impromptu match on the Woodpecker course at Cherokee CC in Madison, Wisc. Greg Smith, former SoHG president and Don Madelung got out on a sunny, slightly breezy 80 degree day. Greg managed to close the match on the 14th hole, by 6 and 4.

Scott Staudacher, left, Scott Petersen, Roger Hill, and Jim Davis represented West Michigan on World Hickory Golf Day.

In Michigan, current SoHG president Scott Staudacher and Society co-founder Roger Hill were joined by Grand Rapids-area residents Jim Davis and Scott Petersen for a round on a 1916 Donald Ross design. Shadow Ridge in Ionia, Mich., is only nine holes but it is a delightful nine and worth going round twice to discover its subtleties.

Send your photos from World Hickory Golf Day to jdavis2364@gmail.com, or to the Society of Hickory Golfers Facebook page. We’d love to see what others were up to this past Sunday.

Enjoy!
