Wide World of Hickory – 2018

December 2018
By Jim Davis

Each year since 2009, the autumn edition of A Wee Nip magazine contained several pages devoted to a summary of the world’s foremost hickory golf events. Selection was based on the significance of the event to the country of origin. All hickory golf outings are significant in their way, but it is impossible to list them all. Many regional events in the U.S., for example, are relevant to that region only; they are as casual or regular outings meant to be enjoyed by friends and members of that region’s hickory golf group.

The original World of Hickory summary in 2009 showcased perhaps a half-dozen events from the National Hickory Championship in West Virginia of the U.S., to the Swedish Hickory Championship in Falsterbo, Sweden. The summary continued for several years, expanding in scope and always in the autumn edition, its intent being to serve as a modest record of these events and their outcomes. It was never contemplated as an exhaustive and complete record such as maintained by the august golfing organizations of modern high-level championship golf.

With the advent of The Golf in the autumn of 2018 by the Golf Heritage Society and the inclusion of pages from the Society of Hickory Golfers, room for the minimum of eight pages necessary for the Wide World of Hickory had to be eliminated. However, we are pleased to offer the yearly summary here and hope it will serve those who wish to explore it for news of the various tournaments. More in-depth reporting for individual tournaments may be found on this and other sites devoted to news of hickory golf tournaments. The Resources tab of this website lists pages for Regional Play Groups and Favorite Links, both of which provide links to hickory golf groups and societies that carry reports of hickory golf tournaments. On this site, search for the tournament’s name or under the Tournament Results for the specific year.
