Wednesday at the Freedman Trophy – Practice Round and Opening Ceremonies

Wednesday morning gave both teams their first glance over the course at Castelconturbia. With narrow tree lined fairways and deep rough, driving is going to be a premium this week. But it’s most likely the team that masters the greens that will prevail. While varied in size the greens at Castelconturbia are well protected and heavily rolling. The North American team was given first glance at the course, teeing off just after 9 a.m., with the European team following just after.

Following a short afternoon break, both teams boarded the bus for the trip across the border into Switzerland for the Opening Ceremonies. The bus ride gave the North American team time to discuss the course and play of the day, helping to better formulate the strategy for the upcoming matches. Dinner was graciously hosted by Hugo Boss at that company’s offices and restaurant in Coldrerio, Switzerland. Wrapped in a lattice of wood, the venue was a wonderful welcome basket for the visiting North American team.

Following a tour of the facility and introductions of the competitors, the two teams sat down and enjoyed dinner together, giving the players from each side a chance to interact and socialize before the matches begin. The return trip was rather quiet, as the players took in their first day in northern Italy and contemplated the start of the matches the following morning.

Below are the Fourball matches set for Thursday. And some photos of the reception and dinner area.
