Update from Day 1 of the Freedman Trophy Matches

Teams prepare to compete for Freedman Trophy, and so much more

May 1, 2018 – Castelconturbia, Italy
Ben Hollerbach, who is on the North American team, is posting daily reports as the matches commence.

Preparations are complete, the teams are set, and the bags are packed. With the start of the 3rd Freedman Trophy just a couple of days away the competitors are gathering in Milan and the Piedmont region of  Italy. What, on paper, is a small gathering of players for a few days of golf is, in practice, so much more. While the majority of the competitors have never met before, these friends come together under their enjoyment and comradery of hickory golf, and their appreciation for Lionel Freedman’s impact on the modern game of hickory.

The matches are sure to be heavily contested, with the trophy being decided by the play on the course, but the greatest take away from this week is certain to be the renewed and grown connection that can only come from hickory golf. Something that Lionel knew well before many of us.

As the players gather, coming from 5,000 miles apart, golf will be played, matches will be won, and new acquaintances will become old friends, just as Lionel would have wanted.
