Smith-Collett Classic off to great start in Connecticut

June 21, 2021
Jacob Orcutt reports:

The results are in for the inaugural Smith-Collett Hickory Classic at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Conn.  Our thanks to the entire field for their participation; what a great day of golf!

Tim Ball of Marston Mills, Mass., and William ‘Wardy’ Wardwell of Turners Falls, Mass., both tied at 75. Both great scores, but only one could be declared the champ, so after a scorecard matchup, the victory went to Tim.  Joseph Mentz of Vernon finished third with 79.

Wardy, however, claimed the net Stableford title, with 41 points on the modified Stableford scoring system. Matt Hardisty of Chaplin, Conn., finished second with 38 points, with Jacob Orcutt of Coventry, Conn., finishing third with 35 points (matching cards with Tim Ball, who also scored 35 points).

The senior and womens division champions were Jeffrey Blomstedt of Gill, Mass., and Irene Dionne of Hampton, Conn., respectively.

Congratulations to all participants, and thank you for making it such a great day.  Special thanks to Jack and Gayle Crosby for the donation of a permanent trophy featuring a silver dish from the 1930 club championship at Shennecossett Golf Course.  Thanks as well to Jim Coll for his donation of biscotti for the participants.

Finally, a big thank you to Eric Morrison and Shennecossett for hosting us.

Keep an eye out for a date for next year’s event, as well as other tournaments that may be on the horizon.
