Ron Perlman digs deep to take 2023 Steam Shovel title

MHS’s annual “Steam Shovel” tournament at Hackensack Golf Club bookended our 12th successful season. Once again we were blessed with phenomenal course conditions! The greens ran true & keen, perhaps rivaling the speed we experienced at Ridgewood Country Club this year. We especially thank Sean Cunningham for being such a gracious host. We missed our friends “Old” Tom Morris and David Li this year due to travel but look forward to teeing up with them next year.

Results:
1st Gross: Ron Perlman
2nd Gross: Frank Flood
1st Reserve: Mike Guerrero
2nd Reserve: Jared Paletti

Course Rating from the Green Tees: 68.2, Slope of 127.

Our event is named in honor of Hackensack Golf Club’s architect Charles Banks. He was nicknamed “Steam Shovel Banks” due to his frequent utilization of steam shovels to move vast amounts of material to create huge, elevated greens & deep bunkers. In the style of his mentor C.B. Macdonald, he incorporated template holes at HGC including the Biarritz (3rd) & Redan (12th). The club later incorporated a Punchbowl (16th) in the spirit of Banks.
