Sept. 30 – The 8th annual Wisconsin Hickory Championship was held this past week in Green Lake, Wisc. at Lawsonia Golf Course. It is the home course for the Wisconsin Hickory group and was in great shape, with a hint of fall in the air and the trees just starting to change.
Thursday was the traditional practice round and meet-and-greet at the official Kummel Cup Cabin just off hole number 2. The pizza party was a big hit and pairings were drawn for the tournament.
Eventual 2018 champion Steve Simer led after day one in the Open division with a 76. In the Senior division George Burgland shot a very fine 82 and Dan Norstedt, in the Super Senior division shot a very nice 83 to lead after day one. Our traditional Friday night club swap and all-you-can-eat fish fry were a big hit. After dinner, the Kummel Cabin was the perfect setting to spin some stories, sample some Kummel, and enjoy the great company.
Saturday was a beautiful fall Wisconsin day, perfect for golf. Mr. Simer maintained his lead to walk away with a five-shot victory over second place finisher Ernie Ernst (First Place Net winner), with Bert Coghill coming in third. Jim “Doc” Eike took second in the Net Division.
Senior Division winner George Burgland never let up, with second going to Jim Griffen (First Place Net winner), who was only two back after day one. He just could not keep pace with the hot 79 Mr. Burgland fired on the second day. Third Place went to Dave Gamet (Second Place Net Winner). Other award winners were Greg Smith in Third Place, and Mark Larson in Second Place Net, and Denny Olson in Third Place Net.
Our Super Senior Division was won by David Boyd who caught Dan Norstedt on day two. It was a fine match that came down to the last hole for his one shot victory. Mr. Norstedt finished First Place Net.
