Results 2018 Onion Creek Hickory Classic

First Tee of Austin participants in the 2018 Onion Creek Hickory Classic, all outfitted by Kings Cross Knickers. Event host Pete League, center, was proud to welcome the players to the outing.

March 29, 2018 – Austin, Texas

Pete League reports – We had participants from The First Tee of Austin for the first time.  Two three-person teams played in a special Scramble format.  Kings Cross Knickers provided full knicker outfits for all six juniors. They looked great!

Eighty-five persons registered and seven withdrew for various reasons of illness, injury, or work obligations.

Robin Burke, Captain of the American Team for the 2016 Curtis Cup Matches, a member of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, and manager of Champions Golf Club in Houston (site of the 2020 U. S. Women’s Open) was our guest speaker.

The event’s raffle raised $3,650 through the generosity of our donors and our ticket-buyers. We soared past the $19,000 threshold toward our $25,000 goal. Every dime has gone to Austin’s Mobile Loaves and Fishes. I suspect that sometime during the next 3-4 months, we will have reached that goal, taking a homeless couple off the streets forever.  THANKS TO EVERYONE!!! (Raffle prizes and winners are listed below.)

(Background:  About a year ago, my wife and I decided to attempt to raise $25,000 toward the purchase of a mobile home to be placed in Mobile Loaves & Fishes‘ Community First Village, an initiative to take homeless persons off the streets. CFV has already placed over 170 persons into permanent homes.  This latest fund-raising effort puts us just under the $20,000 mark – about 80 percent toward our goal.)

As for the golf outing, Scott Wimmer of Swansea, Ill. kicked butt with two 75s.

In the Swift Trophy Matches (results shown below), the American Team beat the Canadian team by a strong 20.5 to 15.5 margin.  Hal Coward of Texas was the MVP for the American Team and Gino Narduzzi was the MVP for the Canadian Team, each now the owner of a Michael Roche (sculptor) miniature version of the Keeper-of-the-Green sculpture.

Virgil Swift, long-time supporter of hickory golf at Onion Creek Club, was presented with a special version of our poster signed by each of the participants.
