Work goes on to complete a restoration of the Southern Pines Golf Course in Southern Pines, N.C. The Donald Ross layout was acquired by the Pine Needles resort and has the loving attention of its owners to bring the layout back to Ross’ intentions. The work has revealed a “lost” par 3 hole, thanks to close examinations of Ross’ blueprints. Golf writer Mike Purkey filed a story for the Morning Read website on the restoration and the par 3. Hickory golfers who attend the annual Mid Pines Hickory Open sometimes come early or stay late to try a round at Southern Pines. After its restoration, they will find a fresh venue to test those mashies and mid irons. The story reports that the course is hoping to open on Sept 1 of this year.
