Old hickory putters wanted for First Tee groups in Texas

Pete League is looking for old hickory putters to be repaired and given to First Tee players. Here’s Pete’s info:

The Inaugural Texas First Tee Hickory Championship was held recently at Onion Creek Club in Austin, Texas.  Five four-person teams participated and the Dallas, Texas chapter kicked butt with an even par performance.  All players on the first three teams (12 players in all) received a hickory-shaft putter. We have Max Hill (Texas) and Rob Alschewede (Washington) and others, to thank for the putters.  All putters were in great shape.

Looking to the future, we can see a time when those putters will be less available.

One of our Austin hickory players, Onion Creek member John Drake, has stepped forward and volunteered to take old, beat up, nobody-wants-that-piece-of-junk putters and refurbish them for presentation to junior golfers in future Texas First Tee Hickory Championships and possibly other junior hickory tournaments.

John is ready to receive your putters of the above description, photograph, identify and refurbish them. He will keep a log of all putters received, from whom they were received and the putters’ ultimate disposition. Years from now, it will be of interest to see how this project progressed. It will also be interesting to see how many of today’s junior golfers, having received a hickory putter, ultimately become SoHG or GHS members.

As part of the results summary for future Onion Creek Hickory Classics, we will publish a summary of this project. You can see some great photos and the full results of the Texas First Tee Hickory Championship at www.OnionCreekHickoryClassic.com

For now, just putters; we have not yet discussed including other hickory clubs within the scope of this project. (The sharp-eyed will notice a stray jigger that fell in among the putters in the image on the Home Page.)

If you want to be a part of this project, you can send your tired old hickory putters to:
