NWHP celebrates World Hickory Golf Day at Meadow Park GC

The Northwest Hickory Players hosted the 9th Vintage Hickory Classic at Meadow Park Golf Course, a 1915 public course near Tacoma, Wash.  The Vintage was initiated 10 years ago to celebrate National Hickory Golf Day, and now continues to celebrate World Hickory Golf Day, offered by the Society of Hickory Golfers.

The day started grey and cool but developed into a sunny, in the 60s, beautiful day for hickory golf.  Thirty-nine players teed it up mid-morning and then gathered after their rounds for conversation, good food and drink and the presentation of prizes.  Medals went three deep in all divisions plus a small cash payout as well.

This year’s Vintage Champion was Brent Hudgins of Vancouver, Wash., who finished with 77 edging out Marshall Huston by a single stroke.  The Senior Champion, Tom Kennedy, of Seattle, also carded 77.  The Super Senior Champion, Tom Driscoll, came in with 81 and the Ladies Champ, Chelsea Guenette finished with 92. There were seven scores at 81 or better.

The celebration of World Hickory Golf Day continued after golf with discussions of equipment, maintenance of clubs, talk of the next event, past victories and defeats and stories of the great shots of the day. With the largest field ever for the Vintage we are looking forward to 2022 and the next Vintage at Meadow Park.

The players all thank the staff at Meadow Park for extending such a warm welcome and  supporting hickory golf – they have special hickory range balls, a grand history of golf display in the clubhouse and maintain sets of hickory shafted rental clubs for anyone to use.
