(Note – This is how hickory golf spreads, with the joy and enthusiasm of one person who hopes to share the game with others. You can’t help but admire Forrest’s optimism and his hope that other golfers in his area will come on to experience a few shots with the great old clubs. If you are Down East in mid-September, see if you can cadge a day from the calendar to join him at Mere Creek. No matter if it is a one-person event, or two dozen, we wish you all the best with the Hickory Club Open, Forrest.)

From Forrest Dillon –
Hello, I’d like to mention a small tournament in Brunswick, Maine.

The Hickory Club Open will be Sept. 16, at Mere Creek Golf Club, a nine-hole course well-suited to hickory clubs. (I’ve been practicing with my hickories since May).

I came up with the idea in early May, after seeing a couple of old hickories in the pro shop. The pro, Kevin Joseph, agreed and put it on the calendar. There hasn’t been much publicity, other than people seeing me play with hickories. I leave my collection (about a dozen clubs) in the shop for people to examine and practice with on the range, and I’ve put up a few simple posters.

It’s not going to be a large gathering, I’m afraid, but maybe a start. The format (I think) will be 9 holes, 2-person teams, scramble. The idea is that a team can share clubs if necessary, so not everyone needs a complete set.

I had hoped that a fair number of people would use the summer to find hickories and practice with them; but I don’t think many have. Yet, whenever I take someone to the range and have them hit a few balls, they invariably like it!

So, for what it’s worth, any hickory enthusiast who happens to be in Brunswick, Maine on Sept. 16 will be welcome to join us.
