Iowa’s Youngberg takes Mid American honors

Denny Olson reports:

A successful event was enjoyed by all at this year’s Mid-American Hickory Open, May 20-22, at Soangetaha Country club in Galesburg, Ill.  We had 43 participants from six states and Scotsman, Angus Rollo, who now hails from Hvalsoe, Denmark.  We began in the rain Saturday morning but finished in sunshine. The course was great, and the staff treats us like honored guests.

In our two-day, stroke play event the results were…

Open Division Champion – Gary Youngberg of Ames, Iowa (a return winner), with a score of 158.                                                            Open Reserve, net champion – Jim Eike of Neenah, Wisc.

Senior Division Champion – Kirk Watson of Ames, Iowa, with a score of 164.                                                                                                   Senior Reserve, net champion – Jim McGraw of Oneida, Ill.

Statesman Division (70 years+) – Mike Needleman of Kansas City, Kan., with a score of 169
Statesman Reserve, net champion – James Griffin of Neenah, Wisc.

We also had a Sunday Hickory Scramble competition, with five foursomes. This group was largely composed of Soangetaha members all new to hickory golf. It’s our second year for the scramble which is a great event to include for new players.
