Hopeful signs in the Northwest

May 1, 2020

Early on in the Covid-19 story, Seattle and the Pacific Northwest were rather hard hit. Like everywhere else, people stayed home, businesses closed, and most recreation came to a halt, hickory golf included. But now comes a sign that maybe, just maybe, things are loosening up… sort of, kind of.

The Northwest Hickory Players just announced the scheduling of a hickory golf outing planned for June 13-14 at the Eagle’s Pride Golf Course in Dupont, Wash. It was formerly known as Fort Lewis Golf Course, and played on this military base in 1922 when General Ulysses Grant McAlexander (there’s a name for you!) ordered – ordered!  that a nine-hole course be built. Surely an enlightened military leader.

The NWHP plans a two-day gross and net event in the usual divisions of play and all the other formalities of which we are so fond, equipment, dress, etc.

Of course, caution is still uppermost in their minds and social distancing will be observed. Gatherings before or after the event are not encouraged and, if necessary, awards will be mailed to the victors following the event.

So, it is a bit of mixed bag. Golf is to be played but the social gatherings that make these outings so much fun remains out of reach. It is a start. We are all learning new ways to enjoy the sport until that happy day when pints may again be raised in happy cheer, champions toasted and hosts roasted.

Good on ya, NWHP, we hope the outing is successful and that all the shots are far and true.

By the way, if you are in the neighborhood and want to the join in the event, contact Martin Pool at 425-273-5897 or email fas1863@hotmail.com with questions.
