Hickory golf getting start in Baton Rouge

June 6, 2019
Stan Spring of Baton Rouge, La., reports that things are going well in his quest to introduce hickory golf as an inducement to preserving the town’s City Park Golf Course, which had come under some pressure to close.

“Yesterday, George Morris, feature writer for the Baton Rouge Advocate, came with his photographer to do a feature on hickory golf at City Park,” Spring says. “I provided four bags of pre-1900 clubs, gutta balls (ones I made and some St. Andrews gutties) with which we played three holes followed by six holes of modern hickory using 1920s replicas.”

Morris’ article is scheduled for a June 12 publication date. Morris is a golf and told Spring he had “lots of fun.”

Spring has placed some photos and a description of the day on his Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100012969432376

The page also includes a poster now displayed at pro shop that asks for hickory club donations from SoHG members and Friends of City Park. Spring plans to restore them to playable use for those who wish to try hickories at City Park.

“We shall see how things go,” Spring says. “Next phase is organizing an all-hickory event and a local hickory league.”

Always encouraging to read how hickory golf is growing on a grass roots level. Keep sending us your cards and letters (read emails and posts) and we’ll share them here.
