Hickory golfers have a generous side. Besides the enjoyment of the sport, more and more tournament directors and players are adding charitable components to their events, just like the Big Golf Tours.
Mike Stevens, a Tampa, Fla. teaching professional who helps to manage the Florida Hickory Golfers, is the host of the annual U.S. Pro & Amateur Hickory Golf Championship. Each year, the tournament raises money to support Operation Helping Hand Tampa, an organization that supports active duty wounded military personnel and their families.
Stevens is proud to announce that this year’s donation amounted to $2,200, which he presented to the organization’s chairman, Colonel Jim Griffin, at the Charles Haley VA Spinal Cord Rehab Center on April 18.
Over the past eight years, the tournament and its supporters have raised more than $16,000 for the organization.
“I would like to thank all who participated in or donated to the success of the U.S. Pro & Amateur Hickory Golf Championships,” Stevens said. “I could not do it without your support.”
Around the country other hickory golf tournaments have similar programs in place. The Onion Creek Hickory Classic, hosted by Pete League, and the North Texas Hickory Open, hosted by Scott Pilgrim, both raise money for local charities.
If your tournament or hickory golf activities offer a similar program of charitable support, please let us know.
It’s good news that is worth sharing.
