Hackensack impresses golfers of the Metro Hickory Society

The Metropolitan Hickory Society annual knows hot to select courses of historic pedigree and architectural distinction. Their September “Steam Shovel” event at the Hackensack Golf Club in Emerson, N.J., was no exception. Here’s Bill Martin’s take on the day and a sneak peak into next season’s lineup for the MHS, which also is our host regional group for the 2023 U.S. Hickory Open at the Inwood Country Club.

Gentlemen!

What can we say about Hackensack GC that we haven’t experienced before. They continue to outdo themselves each and every year and our hosts Sean, Old Tom, and David served up another winner. The course was in mint condition and the new renovations to the uphill 9th held to the outstanding architectural tradition at HGC.

First the dirty details of the day.

New commers Andrew Byron followed by Michael Brandell led the Open Division with Old Tom Morris finishing third.

The Reserve Division was taken by Jared Paletti with Sean Cunningham and Bill Martin tied for second.

Course Rating from the Green Tees: 68.2, Slope of 127.

It is great to see that MHS has attracted many new players and we hope to see the momentum continue to grow. We have some new ideas for the future and look forward to helping out with the 2023 USHO next September at Inwood CC with our friend Adam Russell.

How is this for an architectural line up during 2022.
Hollywood GC – Walter J. Travis/Tom Doak
Ridgewood CC – Warren “Tillie” Tillinghast/Gil Hanse
Inwood CC – Herbert Bertram Strong/Tom Doak
Hackensack GC – Seth Raynor & Charles Banks/Rees Jones

As serious examiners of the tradition of this game in America we are truly blessed to have clubs and hosts that allow us to drink from this fire hose of greatness. Thanks to each and every one of you who helped us promote classic hickory golf in the Metropolitan area.

A additional note here from Jared Paletti who is motivated and engaged in helping our group move forward:

I also wanted to share some exciting updates. MHS established a presence on social media via Instagram/Facebook. The primary purpose is to expand our connections with fellow players, hickory societies & country clubs who share our interest in hickory golf. We encourage you all to follow our MHS accounts. We also have a new e-mail address that provides a centralized platform to upload and share photos of our events with each other. MHS is already one of the top hickory societies in the country and these improvements will only enhance our engagement with each other and the greater hickory community.
