Foxburg notches another classic

Aug. 17, 2021
Tom Johnson reports:

What a wonderful weekend!  How terrific to see everyone, plus a couple of visits from Foxburg’s retired keeper of the green Jeff Texter.  Heartwarming!

As your hosts, Karen and I are extremely fortunate to have the most thoughtful and congenial guests.  The assistance offered is always spot on (thank you Dennis Meadows and Mike Campailla), but what amazes us is you as a group.

For example, Jerry Marron (Foxburg member) printed and donated the stylish score cards, and Sherri Campailla’s penmanship gave the cards a nice touch of formality. Mike and Dennis helped place over 200 bottles of water on the course over two days.  We did not find one empty bottle laying anywhere inappropriate, pure class.

Another example of class and respect – every one of you stayed for the award ceremony; of course the desserts helped.

The meals were fantastic as they are every year, we are fortunate to have Ala Carte Catering as the “Official FHC Caterer”; Cindy and Rod are the best.

And I cannot say enough about the course staff and members. Lexi and Logan were a big help making sure we had tables and carts set up.  The Foxburg board of directors has been great working with us, and the members have been gracious in permitting us to overrun their course for a couple of days.

Not enough can be said about Dawn Welsh. Watching most of you approach and thanking her for a great time is proof enough of your appreciation. Our group could not enjoy ourselves as much without her, and I know Karen and I could not provide the experience we do without her help and hard work.

The scores for the weekend are shown below.

We had entrants in three types of divisions, named by golf balls – Park, Braid, and Ouimet, with an Open and Harvey Division for each golf ball style.  The newly named Harvey Division replaces the Super Senior Division. Harry Harvey was the primary figure at Foxburg for over 50 years. There is an extensive article about the club and its history at golfclubatlas.com, which you can see by clicking here.  This will take a few minutes to read, but if you like Foxburg, this will thrill you.

John Enrietto, sports editor of the local paper, the Butler Eagle, wrote two very nice articles on the event.  The paper’s photographer also caught a few distinguished gentlemen in the act of doing the golf. Maybe we can get John and Seb to join us next year. Click here to see the articles.

Event host Tom Johnson, right, presents an award to Jason Kronenberger, the 2021 Foxburg Champion.

Our 2021 Champion Golfer is Jason Kronenberger (Dayton, Ohio).  Jason opened with 78 to establish a four-shot lead he would not relinquish over previous champion Rick Woeckner (Garrettsville, Ohio).  Bill Geisler (Winter Springs, Fla.) capped off the top three places in the Open Division.

In the Harvey Division, playing the Park ball, Greg Smith (DeForest Wisc.) held on to nip Wally Koss (Packerand, Wisc.) by three shots.

The Braid Division Open Champion is James Kaiser (Louisville Ky.).  James is a multiple-year winner at Foxburg. This year, Dr. Bern Bernacki took him two extra holes before James clinched the win.  Second Runner-up was claimed by Dan Norstedt (Eau Claire, Wisc).

The Harvey Division, using the Braid Ball, was topped by Mr. Bob White (St. Augustine, Fla.), Runner-up was local entry John Brosnahan Jr. (Emlenton, Pa.), with Jim Clawson (Charlottesville, Va.) grabbing the Second Runner-up honors.

2020 champion John Lavendoski was awarded the inaugural Mike Just Perseverance award for overcoming multiple trials and tribulations to attend from the Great Northwest. (No truth in the rumors John is angling to play himself in the reprised version of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.)

It is with utmost pride I write the following:  Tad Moore was not able to attend, but in his usual generosity, Tad donated three of his best-selling replica clubs to use as we wished. These were very sharp and included a center shafted putter, a Mills BSD metal play club, and his popular sand iron.

We raffled the clubs at $5 a chance and did quite well. The raffle generated $690, which was donated to Foxburg Country Club. Additionally, with the fine turnout we had, the tournament cleared over $400 after expenses. This was added to the raffle drawing, totaling a donation to FCC of over $1,100 in addition to the green fees and bar revenues for the club.  This is the third year in row that we, or, I should say, YOU, have been able to provide extra revenues to the club. Tad, I know you will read this, thank you for stepping up and contributing.

We also learned, as we were wrapping up on Saturday, that another member of the field has purchased a long-distance membership to Foxburg. That makes 10 and that is making an impact!

It is difficult to describe how proud we are of all of you and of this event.  This is something Karen and I did not even dream our first several years.  You are simply amazing!

On a side note, the Foxburg Hickory Championship would like to congratulate long time FHC supporter Gordon Beggs and his beautiful wife Marcie on their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 21. Gordon joined us in our early days and has since retired to the Southwest but still remains in contact. Congratulations Marcie and Gordon!

Seeing and visiting with everyone, and observing the interaction among you is so heartwarming, it lifts us. We are looking forward to 2022.  Save the date:  Aug. 11-13, 2022.

THANKS AGAIN, YOU ARE THE BEST!
