Flory, Moore, and Griffen repeat winners at Wisconsin Hickory Open

Ernie Ernst reports:

The 13th annual Wisconsin Hickory Open was contested Sept. 21-23 on the Lawsonia Links at Beautiful Green Lake, Wisc. Peter Flory came out on top as our Champion, defending his title.  The weekend of activities started with a picnic and welcome party at the House on No. 2, complete with music provided by Dicky Walsh. The club swap and pizza party went well into the night.

Friday’s opening round had firm fairways and even firmer rough.  Rain has been lacking in Central Wisconsin and Lawsonia played like the summer links courses of Scotland – hard and fast. That did not stop Mr. Flory from posting an impressive one under 71. The greens at Lawsonia taught all players about the importance of speed and line. Friday night included the Famous Friday night Fish Fry; always a favorite of guests and locals alike.

Saturday started with a 30-minute rain delay and a slight downpour. After getting on the course the players quickly realized why Lawsonia has never been closed due to rain.  The course drained quickly and we soon found out that those greens we thought would be slow, were not.

Thank you to all the players for coming to test your games at this fine hickory course.
