California’s North South grows to 32 golfers

The 2013 North-South was again held at the Pacific Grove Golf Links on the Monterey Peninsula. The weather was great again with the typical early morning (front 9) fog and clear blue skies for the back or ocean 9. The event began with a Friday night evening of socializing atChris Surano’s house for hors d’ouvres and drinks. Many of the 32 golfers were at the social and a good time was had by all. Saturday morning began the eight consecutive tee time starts for the first round/team matches. Both the North and South teams were close in the match till the end when the North team earned their second victory in a row. Chris Surano won the closest to the pin award on the 10th hole next to the Point Pinos lighthouse with a shot that got within 3 feet, 2 inches of the hole. Terry Linton won the Bogey award with his great play on the tough 6th, 7th, and 8th holes. Paul Biocini shot the low round of the day with a 78, followed closely by Eddie Breeden (82), 2012 Champion Chris Surano (83), and Ken Holtz (84).
After the first round, the North team was awarded their medals and the trunk trade show was on. Some good clubs were on display, ending up in others hands by trade and sell. Saturday evening saw wonderful weather and beautiful Bay views on hand for the tournament BBQ at Lover’s Point Park, right on the water. The 45 or so in attendance enjoyed good company, the beach, and some good food.
Sunday morning started off with cooler temps and fog off the bay, but quickly dissipated to show off the great golf happening for round No. 2. Paul Biocini backed up his first round 78 with a cleaner 76 for a two-day total of 154 to win the Senior Open (Jack Neville Cup) and the title of Tournament Champion. Kris Surano shot 79 for his total of 162 to win the Open division (H.Chandler Egan Cup), followed by Eddie Breeden’s 163 and Ken Holtz’s 164.  Hickory rookie Les Schwartz won the Senior Net division and Michael Sloan won his second Open Net award.
The North-South Tournament is growing. We hope to see even more of you next year in late June. The Monterey Peninsula is just too beautiful with too many things to do and see to pass it up. Many of the contestants make this a vacation around the event. Come beat the summer heat and play in cooler temps.
