Thank you to everyone who came out on June 20 for the Smith-Collett Classic. A strong field of 24 golfers contested with 15 mph winds and a firm, dry Shennecossett Golf Course on Connecticut’s eastern coast. High temperatures and gusty winds made it challenging to find the elevated greens on this Donald Ross classic. The field, which included thirteen golfers from Connecticut, five from Massachusetts, three from New York, and one Rhode Islander, consisted of a mix of new and seasoned hickory golfers. The scoring followed a modified stableford format.
In the women’s division, Alexis Jackman from Greenwich, Conn., took home the Glenna Collett prize by scoring 9 stableford points.
In the senior division, our winner was Jeff Blomstedt of Gill, Mass., scored 24 stableford points.
In the net division, event organizer Jacob Orcutt of Coventry, Conn., placed first with 38 net stableford points.
And our Alex Smith champion in the gross division was hickory-newcomer Dan Lombardo of New Milford, Conn. Dan used a borrowed set of hickories to score an impressive 27 stableford points via a strong 80 (+9) on a challenging course.
Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to the entire field for coming out making this a great day. There are a number of hickory golf events throughout New England and the northeast this year – thank you to the entire New England hickory golf community.
