Louis Falcone adds Smith-Collett title for his second New England victory in 2025

Jacob Orcutt reports:

Golfers from Alabama to Massachusetts came together at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Conn. for the 5th annual Smith-Collett Classic – named for former Shennecossett pro and two-time U.S. Open champ Alex Smith, and his star pupil Glenna Collett-Vare, who won the U.S. Amateur Women’s Championship six times.  Shennecossett remains a difficult test of golf, and the dry and hot conditions put the field of 18 golfers to the test.

Alexis Jackman of Greenwich, Conn., took home the title of Glenna Collett champion for placing first in the women’s division.

For the Senior division, Jeff Blomstedt of Gill, Mass., finished in first place with 22 stableford points, followed by Joe Roche of Wallingford, Conn., with 16 points and Roger Dionne of Hampton, Conn., with 15 points.

In the Net division, Law Ager III of Ledyard, Conn., was awarded net champion with a total of 33 points.  Second place went to Martin Ede of Bethany, Conn., with 32 points, and third place went to Jeff Blomstedt with 30 points, who narrowly edged out Roger Dionne and Joe Roche by matching cards.

And in the Open division, Louis Falcone of Cranston, R.I., continues his strong hickory season by taking first place with 29 points, after winning the Alexander Findlay Massachusetts Hickory Open in May.  Second place went to Jeff Blomstedt with 22 points, and third place was Brian Pedersen of Columbia, Conn., with 18 points.

Thanks to all of the competitors, and I hope to see you all next year.  Also remember to sign up for the Goodwin Gutty Open in September (there will be a division for “modern” hickories, too!).
