5th Interstate Tournament builds on success

5th  ANNUAL  INTERSTATE  TOURNAMENT
OLD KINDERHOOK,  MISSOURI
1st – 3rd November, 2012

Hosts – Fred & Sherry Smeltzer

We enjoyed the company of 44 hickory players in perfect golfing weather. For the first time it was possible to hold a couples 9-hole scramble competition on Thursday, with 10 couples taking part. This will become an annual feature of the Thursday practice day.

Fred and Sherry hosted their renowned traditional open house on the Thursday evening, with succulent food and 120 single malts to savour, which set the tone for the weekend and ensured that newcomers soon felt at home. As all participants had accommodation in the Kinderhook community, there was no fear of the drive back afterward!

Five twosomes played the Ladies event on Friday and Saturday, in a joint handicap scramble format; 17 two-person teams entered the Men’s event, comprising joint handicap two-ball better ball on Friday, and joint handicap two-some alternate shot on Saturday. As there were teams representing Germany and England, we are now Inter-National as well as Interstate!

Dinner was provided at the Conference Centre Friday and Saturday with prizegiving following the dinner on Saturday. Fred Smeltzer made splendid Schnectady look-alike hickory putters for the winning Men’s and Ladies teams, and Sherry embroidered towels and golf caps for the runners-up in both Events. The Smeltzers also provided framed infra-red photos taken on the course for the winners and thirdplace couples of the Thursday Event. The Hickory Golf Association kindly provided prizes for each of the firstthree teams in each event, and tee-markers on the course. The winning teams and states (countries!?) represented will be inscribed on the permanent trophies on display at the Kinderhook clubhouse.
The dates for next year’s event will be Oct. 31-Nov. 2, when we will anticipate upwards of 60 players.
