The Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club opened in 1922, designed by noted architect Tom Bendelow. At the time, its 6,400 yards was described by the Tampa Tribune as a “brute of a course.” It was a stout test for the hickory clubs of the day. The golf is course is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, one of only three such in the state. The hickory golf events this weekend also are in celebration of the country club’s 100th year of operation.

This is the 11th playing of the championships commemorating the Florida Open of 1925 and dedicated to John Shippen, America’s first golf pro, and to amateur Oscar Bunn. Both played in the first U. S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.

The U.S. Professional Hickory Golf Championship is sponsored by the United States Golf Teachers Federation and open to all golf professionals, male and female. Players compete for the same $5,000 prize fund associated with the original Florida Open won by Leo Diegel. Also included is a division for amateur golfers. Entry fee for this event is $60.

The event is included in the overall Temple Terrace Hickory Heritage weekend comprised of a hickory scramble followed by a cocktail ball and dinner on Saturday; the Temple Terraces 100 Hickory Golf Challenge on Sunday, and the U.S. Professional Amateur Hickory Championship on Monday.

The Saturday night ball serves as a fund raiser for the Temple Terrace Historic Society.
