The tournament is played on the Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham, Ala., the event is especially enjoyed for its southern hospitality. This is the second of the major SoHG Order of Merit events on the calendar for 2021-22.
Event host Tad Moore reports that Highland Park Golf Course has gone through some major renovations, including new bent grass greens and all new “Billy Bunkers.” “These two changes, along with some other subtle course changes, will mean we will have a wonderful course for our event,” Tad says.
“The Southern Hickory is one of the oldest hickory events in the world and one we feel gives players the opportunity to partner with a friend and come and have an enjoyable weekend playing hickory golf together,” Tad says.
Tad advises entries be sent as soon as possible. Plans are to have a welcome party/trade show on Thursday night at the clubhouse and a lunch before the first round on Friday, which will be a noon or 1 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner on your own Friday night. The final day, Saturday, will begin with photos at 8:30 a.m. and a tee off at or slightly before 9 a.m.
All teams will compete under a modified Stableford format using the total of each team’s better ball points earned in competition.

Double or worse = 0 Bogey = 1
Par = 2 Birdie = 3 Eagle = 4
Each team begins its round with a number of points based on their combined handicaps. For example, if a team has a 10 handicap and an 18 handicap player, they will start the round with 28 points. Two 10 handicap players will start with 20 points. Two scratch players will start at zero points. And so on. From that point on, it is a matter of winning as many Stableford points as you can, based on the point system above. As always in two-person better ball, one player may score better than his partner (no handicap is used in on-course scoring). One division, three sets of tees.
“This creates a great competition and offers every team the opportunity for a prize,” Tad says. “I will award four places in this new competition. After the round there will be food and I hope to have you on your way as soon as possible. We should play in four hours or less.”
