It was unseasonably cool during the three days of the WHO Classic, but that did not diminish the enjoyment of 38 golfers from around the country who traveled to Wyandotte, Mich., for this enjoyable hickory celebration. Golfers from as far as Florida made it to the event.
It began with a Friday warm-up round on the West Shore Country Club course, hosted by Bruce Markwardt, known for his club restoration expertise. Markwardt and wife, Doreen, hosted the players for drinks and hors d’oeuvres following the round. All this overlooking the Detroit River on Grosse Ilse.
The WHO Scramble on Saturday was won by Bill Ellington and Patrick Slinglend with a 2-under posting. Grumbling as to the outcome was minimal as the two men are held in such high esteem.
On Sunday, the medal play opened to a brisk morning temperature of 48 degrees, surprising some in the field who were not quite prepared for the unseasonable dip. Nonetheless the event was a grand success and the temperature rose throughout the day, along with several scores.
