Surano tops field of 24 at California Hickory Open

The California Hickory Open

The 2015 CA Hickory Open, Nov. 6-8, held at the 1930 San Clemente GC was another success. The weather was great as usual in sunny Southern California.  Temps were in the mid 70’s and skies so clear that Catalina Island looked to be reachable with a well struck Brassie.  24 players braved the tough weather and playing conditions with SPF 50 and sun glasses.

Saturday’s round was the talk of the event. The format was 2-man scramble match play, with Auld Golf rules. The ball was played down, stymies were in effect, and match play was welcomed with open arms. Many of the matches were very close. With drinks on the line, many of the matches went the distance.

Saturday night included the tournament dinner at the nearby OC Tavern. We were not only treated by the tex-mex style dinner, but also a nice view of a rocket shot from a submarine from the Pacific in the star-lite night sky. Of course, room trading after dinner is a must, along with the typical hallway putting contest.

Sunday’s round was back to the usual stroke play style to decide California’s Hickory champions. The divisions were a little different this year, as we had 14 Senior golfers, 2 Open, and 8 in the Gutty division.  Congratulations to Kris Surano who earned the tournament championship with a nice 77. Ken Holtz was the Senior champion, Rudy Kastelic Senior Net. Eddie Breeden was the Gutty Champion, and Bob Wolfensperger Gutty Net.

Negotiating, or an attempt to do so, a stymie.
