The newly organized Nebraska Hickory Golf Association is proud to announce its first annual Sandhills Hickory Open. The event will also serve as the official Nebraska Hickory Open of the NEHGA, says organizer Kevin Cawley. It has all the makings of something special.
For one thing, the Dismal River Golf Club is a private golf retreat in the Nebraska Sandhills. It is on a 2,900-acrea parcel that includes a working cattle ranch and, from photos on its website, what appears to be some beautiful golf terrain. It is certainly free from distraction and offers wide vistas of sky and rolling land. The links-style course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak.
From the club’s website: “When you drive down our “17 mile drive” on a one-lane blacktop county road, you will feel the peacefulness of the area seep into your soul. Your shoulders relax, the tension goes away, you breathe a little deeper, then you realize you’ve arrived at golf heaven … 36 holes of outstanding, “inland links” golf at a world-class operation!”
That’s quite an invitation and it appears that the NEHGA have negotiated something special in order to hold a hickory golf outing at the club. It will be limited to 20-24 players, with the option of a practice round on Friday (to be scheduled and paid for by participants).
