Results from Michiana Hickory Open

The third annual Michiana Hickory Open Golf tournament was held on Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Warren Golf Course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

For the third straight year, Bert Coghill from Illinois garnered the top honors with a score of 82. Bert will have his name inscribed on a permanent trophy that will be hung on the wall at the Notre Dame clubhouse. Thanks to a contribution from GCS member, Tom Irving, a wood shafted golf club with the name “Berman’s South Bend” was attached to an oak display board. In addition Bert received a nice coffee mug from the 2012 Ryder Cup held at Medinah and a gift certificate from the Pro Shop.

In the Open Division, newcomer Todd Bassett’s net 73 won the Gold Medal, with Joe Bodnar in 2nd place with 78, and Marius Kucinas taking the Bronze medal with 79.

In the Senior Division, Lloyd Slinglend barely edged out fellow Wyandotte Hickory Organization member Ed Ronco by one stroke and captured the Gold medal with 69. Past SoHG president Bob Caston won the Bronze medal with 71.

There was just one entry in the Scramble division and each player received some Notre Dame golf caps.

Jim Collins nabbed Closest to the Pin on Hole No. 4 and Tom Clements sank the longest putt on No. 13. Each participant received a Notre Dame Bag Tag and a free drink ticket while the new players all received a nice gift from the committee. Special thanks to Ed Ronco for the use of some hickory clubs, and to Tim Gray for taking the official photographs.

John Foster, the general manager of the Notre Dame golf course and his staff, Cody               and Greg Helkamp, did a super job with the course set up, scoring, and first class customer service. In 2015, the tournament will return to its regular date on the third Saturday in August.

Jim Jeselnick, GCS Region 6 Director, would also like to thank Director at Large Brad Baird for bringing two new players to the tournament, Tom Borger for his assistance in planning, and Ron Bakaitis for making the oak display plaque.
