In praise of hickory golf

Curt Sampson’s books are on most of our bookshelves. He has written about Ben Hogan, The Masters, the British Open, Palmer and Nicklaus, and much more. There are some 14 books to his credit. Sampson, who lives in Texas, also enjoys a round or two of hickory golf when opportunity permits, and opportunity recently knocked from the direction of the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J. The occasion was the ninth playing of the Hickory Grail, a fixture of the British Golf Collectors Society. The Ryder Cup-style event pits a team of BGCS members from Europe against North American counterparts. Sampson was invited to play and described his experiences in an article for Golf World. It’s a good piece, from one of the best golf writers in the sport.
