Hollerbachs lock up another Southern Hickory 4-Ball

Tad Moore, left, with the 2014 Southern 4-Ball Hickory champions Ben, left, and Matt Hollerbach.

Low scores marked the 2014 Southern 4-Ball Hickory Championship over the Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham. Players from across the spectrum posted hot numbers with Ben and brother Matt Hollerbach turning in a two-day 132 for low net honors. They were followed by Cliff Martin and Randy Jensen with 135, and Breck Speed and Jeremy Moe with 136.

On the net side of things, the winning team was Bill Geisler and Keith Cleveland with 121. In second were Bill Lutz and John Roth with 121 (scorecard playoff), and Jim Rohr and Mark Hollingsworth with 122.

Of the 37 teams in the field, 21 turned in net scores of 150 or less. Six had net scores in the 130s.

Congratulations to Ben and Matt on their victory. And to Tad and Keith for another fine Southern 4-Ball outing.

   Tad adds the following:

I want to thank all of you for coming. You have made this event possibly the best one. We did miss long-time participants, Chris Deinlein and Hamp Munsey, who were unable to attend as Hamp’s wife had a last-minute health issue with her heart. She is fine, by the way.

We did have a fine young man from the First Tee of Birmingham playing hickory for the first time as a “marker”. He enjoyed himself.

Thursday found the golf course firm and fast and some good scores were reported during the party that night. I think more of you came this year for drinks, food and the trade show. I hope you enjoyed the music and the evening.

Friday we were entertained around 12:30 am with some thunder and lightning and some rain. The course still retained a lot of its speed. Great scores. There were six scores in the 60s and nine in the 70s. Wow! The best was a 65.

Saturday, when the dust cleared, I had new winners.  The Hollerbach boys, Ben and Matt. The posted 66 and 66 for a two-day 132. Wonderful golf.

I have attached a couple pictures but I encourage you to go the The Hickory Golf Hub, the web site of Richard and Kathy Bullock, for all the pictures of not only my event but many others. Great site. They provided the picture of Ben and Matt.

I hope you will come back in 2015. My dates are the same week – April 23-25,  Thursday through Saturday. I am thinking about adding flights to the event. Championship, First and Second. Because of playing the same tees it would be possible for someone, I suppose, to come from First Flight to winning. I would appreciate your comments about this.

Thanks again for your participation. I had help from Belfor, Mountain Valley, Keith Cleveland, and the staff of Highland Park in making this happen.
I hope to see you again at another hickory event. Please feel free to let me know your thoughts.

    Regards, Tad Moore
