Georgia’s Ross courses – a dogleg right

The February e-newsletter of the SoHG featured an entry by Jim Clawson regarding the Donald Ross golf courses in Georgia. Ross was certainly busy in the great Peach State. Jim, however, might have used an outdated source for some of his listings.

In the spirit of getting things right, SoHG member Ben Hollerbach, of Brookhaven, Ga., wrote to offer a few updates to the list.

“I appreciate Jim Clawson’s article,” Ben says, “but I feel it is necessary to supply a list of corrections.”

Well, we are nothing if not happy to update and sort out information where we can. So, for those of you who are Georgia golfing fans, here’s a few updates from Ben:

As of today there are currently only 11 Donald Ross courses in Georgia: Athens CC, Augusta CC, Bacon Park GC, Brunswick CC, CC Columbus, East Lake GC, Forest Hills GC, Highland CC (9), Savannah CC, Washington CC (9), and the Wilmington Island Club.

Both no. 2 courses at Bacon Park and East Lake are no longer, as well as the Gainseville and Roosevelt courses.

The Augusta CC discussed in the article is actually Augusta, Maine. Augusta CC in Georgia is an 18-hole original Ross design. It sits across Rae’s Creek from its famous neighbor, Augusta National, and is extremely exclusive.

Only 9 holes at Savannah CC are Ross and the Sheraton Savannah Course is now known as Wilmington Island.

For his part, Jim Clawson was appreciative of Ben’s efforts. “All okay,” he says. “I’m glad Ben updated.”
