!!!CANCELLED!!!
April 16-18
Highland Park GC
Birmingham, Ala.

Dear Southern Hickory players,
As you know the tournament is scheduled for a month from now, April 16-18. Even though the State of Alabama does not have a large number of COVID-19 cases, the governor has now put restrictions on people here.  Because of this and the other concerns we all have, I have decided to cancel this year’s event. It might be possible to move to another date and I will look into it.

I am sorry to have to cancel, but your health and safety is the most important thing. Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions. I will get with you as soon as I can regarding the refund for your paid entries.

If I have any new information in the next few weeks regarding the event I will reach out to you. As always, thanks for your great support of my event.

One of the longest-running hickory golf events, the Southern Hickory Four Ball Championship is a must-play event on the hickory golf calendar. Be sure to check your calendar, too, as the event returns to its customary mid-April time in 2020. The tournament is played on the Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham, Ala., the event is especially enjoyed for its southern hospitality. This is the second of the major CS events on the calendar for 2019-20.

Event host Tad Moore reports that Highland Park Golf Course has gone through some major renovations, including new bent grass greens and all new “Billy Bunkers.”  “These two changes, along with some other subtle course changes, will mean we will have a wonderful course for our event,” Tad says.

“The Southern Hickory is one of the oldest hickory events in the world and one we feel gives players the opportunity to partner with a friend and come and have an enjoyable weekend playing hickory golf together,” Tad says. “In looking over the past fields and after consulting with hickory golf friends, I will be making a format change this year.  Traditionally I have around eight to 10 teams that can compete for the overall Gross Championship and the other teams are playing for other awards. In 2020 I will have two divisions –  Open Division gross and net.

“All other teams will compete in the new Stableford Division using the total of both players points in competition.”

The points in that division will go this way: Double or worse – 0;  Bogey – 1 point; Par – 2 points; Birdie – 3 points; Eagle – 4 points.

For example, in a team with Player A who is a 10 handicap and Player B who is an 18 handicap, Player A will start his round with 10 points and his partner, Player B, will begin with 18 points. NO handicap is used to get points. Each team’s target would be 44 points team total to reach what would be considered even par scoring. For our example team, 28 plus 44 = 72 points. As in best ball, one player may score better and pick up his partner.

“I have determined this will create a great competition for players and will provide every team in the Stableford Division an opportunity for a prize,” Tad says. “I will award four places in this new competition.”

Tad advises entries be sent as soon as possible. Plans are to have a welcome party/trade show on Thursday night at the clubhouse and a lunch before the first round on Friday, which will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner on your own Friday night. The final day, Saturday, will begin with photos at 8:30 a.m. and a tee off at or slightly before 9 a.m.

“After the round there will be food and I hope to have you on your way as soon as possible,” Tad says. “We should play in four hours or less.”
