To commemorate its centennial, the historic Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort (www.shawneeinn.com) is hosting its first annual Shawnee Hickory Golf Classic, Oct. 7-9. The course, built by A.W. Tillinghast in 1911, hosted the 1938 PGA Championship in which Paul Runyan defeated Sam Snead 8 & 7 in the final. It is a beautiful, historic facility in Pennsylvania on the banks of the Delaware River an hour north of Philadelphia. Noted golf teacher, author and golf collector Dr. Gary Wiren will be on hand and will offer two presentations as part of the weekend.

The schedule:
Friday, Oct. 7:

  •     Practice rounds during the day   
  •     5 p.m. Cocktail Hour
  •     6 p.m. Dinner
  •     Evening presentation, Dr. Gar Wiren – "THE CURIOUS HISTORY OF GOLF...THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED"

 
Saturday, Oct. 8:

  •     10 a.m. – Gary Wiren "Golf Show/Clinic"
  •     Noon – Lunch
  •     1 p.m. – First round shotgun start
  •     6 p.m. – Cocktail Hour
  •     7 p.m. – Dinner (encouraging guests to dress in period attire)

 
Sunday, Oct. 9:
    8 a.m. – Second round, Shotgun start
    1 p.m. – Lunch and Awards Presentation

Travel Information

The $598 fee is all inclusive – two nights stay at the Shawnee Inn (double occupancy); two breakfasts, lunches and dinners; two cocktail parties; practice round and two tournament rounds; tournament gift; all taxes and gratuities.

Fee for a single room is $809, all inclusive.

The Tillinghast Association's annual meeting also is scheduled for the resort that weekend. (Tillinghast Association members are offered a special reduced rate of $599 single and $444 double occupancy.) The Shawnee course was the first built by the great course architect. A nine-hole par three, the Tillinghast Approach Course, was added later to complement the other 27 holes
